Different parts of this Policy apply to each group, as explained below.
Balad is a Central Bank of Egypt ("CBE")–licensed remittance aggregator. Our role under data protection law depends on the data in question:
If you are an end customer and have questions about a specific transfer, you should usually contact the Partner you transacted with, as they hold the primary relationship with you.
Information you provide directly. When you contact us, request a demo, or apply to become a Partner, we collect details such as your name, work email, phone number, job title, company, and the content of your message. During Partner onboarding and business verification ("KYB"), we collect corporate details, ownership and control information, and identity documents for authorised representatives and beneficial owners.
Account and usage data. When you use our dashboard, sandbox, or APIs, we collect account identifiers, API keys and tokens, configuration settings, and logs of activity such as transactions initiated, statuses checked, and webhooks configured.
Payout transaction data. To process payouts, Partners submit personal data relating to senders and beneficiaries, which may include names, contact details, account numbers, wallet identifiers or phone numbers, delivery method, transaction amounts and currency, references, and information needed for compliance screening.
Information collected automatically. When you use our websites, we and our providers may collect device and connection data (such as IP address, browser type, and operating system), and usage data through cookies and similar technologies (see the Cookies section below).
Information from other sources. We may receive information from Partners, identity-verification and screening providers, sanctions and watch-list databases, payment and banking networks, and publicly available sources, where permitted by law.
To meet KYC/KYB and AML obligations, we may process identity data such as national ID numbers, passport or other identification-document details, and dates of birth. We process this data only where necessary to comply with legal and regulatory requirements or to deliver the Services, and we apply appropriate safeguards to protect it.
We use personal data to:
Under Egypt's Personal Data Protection Law (Law No. 151 of 2020) and, where applicable, the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation ("GDPR"), we rely on one or more of the following legal bases: performance of a contract; compliance with a legal or regulatory obligation; your consent (which you may withdraw at any time); and our legitimate interests in operating and securing our business, where those interests are not overridden by your rights.
We do not sell personal data. We share it only as needed to run the Services and meet our obligations, including with:
Balad is based in Egypt, and our providers may be located in other countries. Where we transfer personal data across borders, we do so in accordance with Egypt's Personal Data Protection Law and, where GDPR applies, we rely on appropriate safeguards such as standard contractual clauses or other legally recognised transfer mechanisms. We take reasonable steps to ensure that transferred data continues to be protected.
We keep personal data only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this Policy, and longer where required to meet AML, CBE, tax, accounting, or other legal record-keeping obligations. When data is no longer required, we securely delete or anonymise it.
We maintain administrative, technical, and organisational measures designed to protect personal data, including encryption in transit, access controls, and monitoring. Balad's card-data environment is PCI-DSS certified. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to protect your data and to respond appropriately to any incident. If you believe your account or data may be at risk, contact us at security@balad.me.
Our websites use cookies and similar technologies to operate the site, remember preferences, and understand usage. You can control cookies through your browser settings; disabling some cookies may affect how the site works. Where required by law, we will ask for your consent before setting non-essential cookies.
Subject to applicable law, you may have the right to access the personal data we hold about you; to request correction of inaccurate data; to request erasure; to restrict or object to certain processing; to request portability; and to withdraw consent where processing is based on consent. You can exercise these rights by contacting us at privacy@balad.me.
If you are an end customer (a sender or beneficiary) and your data was submitted by a Partner, we will generally direct your request to, or handle it together with, that Partner, since they act as the primary controller for that data.
If you have concerns we cannot resolve, you may lodge a complaint with the Egyptian Personal Data Protection Center or, where GDPR applies, with your local data protection supervisory authority.
We may update this Policy from time to time. When we do, we will post the revised version here and update the "Last updated" date above. Where required by law, we will provide additional notice or seek consent. Please review this Policy periodically.
